Our orchid garden is currently being renovated. It was time to change some of the wires from which the orchids are hanging and also to cut back some of the "weeds" which were almost covering the orchids.
The orchid garden has been one of our main attraction for many years, it's close to the lodge, so even when it's about to rain there is still enough time to check out some of the most beautiful flowers that our forest has to offer.
Since 2019 we have also been monitoring the flowering times of the different species. It's no surprise that there is a strong seasonality. The best season - if you're interested in seeing lots of different flowers - is the early rainy season, December to March. With a good eye you can spot 30 to 40 species then. But even in the dry seaon (July to September) you can almos always find at least 10 species blooming.
The monitoring also gave us an idea on how many species there are in total in the orchid garden and which blooming patterns there. A few species have flowers year round whereas most of them have between one and three flowering periods. With a few more years of data we will probably be able to also see how much the flowering matches the rainfall patterns throughout the year for each species.
